The gears are numbered on your shifters, right? The lower the number, the lower your effective speed at a constant pedaling speed. If you wanna go faster or pedal slower, shift either the front up (larger number/larger ring) or the rear up (larger number/smaller ring), if you wanna go slower or pedal faster, shift either the front down (smaller number/smaller ring) or the rear down (smaller number/larger ring).
Also avoid being in the highest (largest) gear in the front and the lowest (largest) gear in the back and vice versa, it's called cross chaining and it increases friction and therefore chain wear and decreases drivetrain efficiency.
