>>1311710The Uranium mines in the Grand Canyon still exist, and at least one is still active while numerous others are awaiting the congressional assessment to finish by 2032. The reason why anyone would even propose mining in or near one of the most beautiful national parks is because there is enough Uranium in the current and proposed mines to power the US for decades, it holds an estimated 5%-10% of the un-mined Uranium in all of North America (Uranium close to the crust surface is pretty hard to come by). The Canyon Mine was mining Uranium into the 1990s before it halted operations, and the mining company wants to continue operations, but it holds a comparatively small amount of ore potential than other proposed mines. It's a constant debate between potential economic and developmental benefit to the country, or potential detrimental effects to our precious natural wonders and national parks.
