Otherwise it could be defensive or a reaction strike with some fish, especially when spawning. I heard somebody once say that certain lures look like a smaller fish with food hanging out of its mouth and the fish are trying to scare em and get them to drop it. I could see that with crankbaits where the lip or maybe the split ring or snap swivel looks like an even smaller fish in the mouth.
