Lots of people like external frame packs because they can lash all kinds of stuff on them. Full size splitting maul? Firewood? Your bicycle? A deer?
Pic related. You can use this pack for normal things, and then take the pack part off and you're left with a durable as fuck loadhauling platform you can put a quartered moose on if you want to.
I prefer internal frame for my purposes though.
