I've kept thinking about this. Bridging the gap between the self-sufficient old style farmer and the more recent life easing technologies is the way of the preferable future, the way I see it. Looking through innovations there's a whole heap of technology that could work for this purpose. Electric generators like wind, solar and hydropower work great. For food there are now vertical farms, cheap growlights in the form of LEDs, hydro and aeroponics which can be combined with biotecture waste management and/or aquaculture. Looking through history using the internet you can also see advancements for technologies which can prove to be very useful to you and you can also look up natural remedies, first aid, water treatment/purification and whatever else you may need.
