South of France is a very nice place to hang out and camp easily.. If you are smart you can found nice place every night to camp, around river for exemple or in forest.. French people are not crazy like American for private property, you can sleep almost every where except in private garden or public park.
If you change of place every night you must be totally stupid to have real problem. Generally people are pretty friendly with traveler, they give you water and sometimes food if you ask it friendly. We still have a culture of the "wanderer"/"pèlerin " and respect for the long time traveler, particularly if you arrive by feet. People are always stunning of "how you arrive just in front my home? "
A good friend of mine have cross all the France by feet, he start from Belgium to Spain. His journey took one year and he was welcome every where, only in small town and village of course, forget all that shit in big city. By way don't go in big cities except for took transport but don't try to sleep in it or be welcome..
My favorite place is
-Ardèche, around the river particularly.
-La Drôme, nice place around Vercors, Buy les Baronnies or Die (strange name for English speaker I guess)
-Les Hautes Alpes, thé natural reserve of Queiras.
-L' Hérault, Nice river and mountain.
Pics related is in Drôme
