Fat CAN be very bad for your dog, so you should steer clear of fatty foods for them (excessive fat can cause pancreatitis). It's not alarmist, it's a fact.
As for the table scraps, I hear that justification for why people shouldn't/don't have to feed their dogs dog food. Human scraps used to be the entrails, brains, and other organ meat of animals, among bones and other foods (eg bread). This provided a wide range of nutrients for dogs. Also, back then dogs were allowed to hunt game for themselves, like rodents and rabbits, so they often could provide food for themselves.
