My father and locally elderly people time to time tell us stories from the past that fish was abundant not in size of the catch but also in species as well. People of that time for example does not eat cod for they call it ominous(maybe for the mucus:) because there was better fish such as Sea robin, Bluefish, Acipenser, Big mackerels etc.
For Bonito it changes from year to year some seasons are good, some seasons are ridiculously good but some are worse than ever.
Overall none can deny industrial pollution yet I think overfishing has its due as well.
