>>1186527Does anybody have much experience with larger grain or hay crops?
I have 40 acres that's roughly half field, I mostly just want to use proper rotation to improve soil quality, and if I'm able to cover expenses or even make a buck or two I'd be ecstatic . I've done a bit of research on the subject and I'm thinking about doing testing plots of an acre or two each to see what works best for both me and the wildlife in the area while being low maintenance (I can really only visit every week or so since its 3 hours from where I live).
I mostly just want to know about the realities of these crops ie, how good must irrigation be, what are some common things that can damage a crop to watch out for etc.
Some crops that I've considered planing together or larger mono cropped fields include.
Buckwheat
Clover
Rye
Sunflowers
Sorghum
Sugar beat
Winter wheat
and a few others.
Any pointers on needed equipment, tips on maintenance and care or harvest would be great.
