Netting shores is also ineffective in the ocean because they dont always work, they also cut off food sources. Im not saying I would carry a rifle (you could) but I would carry a smith and wesson 500 as a sidearm on my waist ready to go at all times. A good shooter can draw in under 2 seconds and get a bead on the target. Thousands of fishermen in Alaska do exactly this while fishing salmon in a stream and 1 warning shot is pretty effective. As an avid hunter a shot by this load would drop anything in north america no matter where you shot it. Again people dont have to protect themselves if they dont want to, I could care less. Nevertheless the best self defense is situational awareness, you should have keen eyes and ears while out. Its very easy to hear/see animals walking in a quiet forest especially a bear. On another note we are the invasive species, it would be extremely arrogant to further minimize they're habitat because people are not comfortable being in charge of their own safety.
