Once you get the basics of wound cleaning and bandages, medical tape and painkillers, the rest is pretty much tailored to what you do. For a general /out/ kit you'll want to make sure your basics have some type of bug-bite remedy, splinter removal, and sunburn/rash treatment.
As a /k/ommando I keep a couple different variations of HyFin sSeal, vent, etc.) and CATs with me, no less than two and preferably a CAT for each limb.
Climbers are probably going to want something like splints and triangle bandages for broken bones and other potential fall injuries.
