I will say that I am very aware of my surroundings when sleeping in the open like that. Something small like an armadillo foraging in a bush 10 yards away will wake me...although they are noisy fuckers haha. A tent also might give you a false sense of security about your position when really little more than <1mm of silpoly protects you.
