If tobacco was invented/discovered today it would almost certainly be banned right away. One could argue with good reason. It's addictive, harmful to both user and surroundings and has no (known) beneficial properties. inb4 'it helps me relax, man' - you hear the same thing from potheads and heroin-junkies. Take from that what you will.
I still like smoking even though I know it is bad for me and all reason says I shouldn't. One of my many vices.
