Either one alone is not very useful, though I'd rather have a saw alone than an axe alone for firewood. I take a BAHCO 30" bow saw and a GB Scandinavian Forest Axe.
Reason an axe is important is mainly for splitting logs that you've cut with the saw. Splitting wood greatly expands how much convenient campfire-size wood you can collect. Anything over 6-8" diameter is difficult to burn in a campfire. Splitting logs instead of walking around looking for medium size sticks saves a ton of time and energy.
Saw is important because you can't cut split-able logs with an axe alone.
Axe + saw. Both, never one or the other alone.
