We should unironically cut down more trees, especially in nature preserves. We have more trees today than a hundred years ago because we allowed grasslands, savannas, wetlands, etc to succeed into woodland by stopping natural processes that prevent trees from growing. By not cutting down trees you doom numerous other species that required the open area such as orchids and wildflowers, along with animals like lizards and small mammals.
At the very least, get rid of the useless species like beech and maple. These are species with thin bark that aren't supposed to survive a wildfire. Same with red cedar. Oaks can stay because of acorns.
