There's a lot of ecopsychologists that theorize the disorders that people face today are due to a disconnection to the natural earth. You gotta think that we spent millions of years living in natural environments before domestication and agriculture. We're not adapted to survive in urban jungles, we're adapted to live in savannas.
There's also a bunch of studies that have shown that merely looking at natural environments increases focus, memory, and affect. There's one specific study I remember reading that looked at vegetative cover and mental health in London I think and people that lived in areas with a higher percentage of vegetative cover tended to score themselves as having better mental health than those that lived in areas with less. There's something therapeutic about nature, that's for sure.
