Most tree root systems can extend 1.5 times their height. So, at the very least, you'd need to be planting the tree that distance from the building or pipeline. That distance is set by what the normal height will be when the tree is fully grown. With figs you are talking more than 50 feet of killer root radius at the very least. You of course can help stop this from happening by installing 100mil thick bamboo root barriers 3-4 feet into the ground at least. Then only your grandchildren will need to deal with the mess when the tree finally escapes on a root rampage.
