Had it happen to me too. Got a pair of Lowas back in 2000 when I was 13, quickly grew out of them and they ended up in the closet. Put them on every now and then years later and they fell apart.
A shame they don't make that model any more - apparently it was a predecessor of the Renegade, and unlike those they fit my broad foot very well

Any shoe that uses PU will have the sole disintegrate after about 5-10 years thanks to hydrolysis (here a pic of my Lowas which fell apart after 12 years but were other wise still in prime condition) - but it's hard to find out which models use it and which don't
