For active casting:
Buy jigheads/paddletail senkos, and kastmasters. Try different retrieve speeds until you learn the hunting speed of your target.
For bait and wait:
Dropshot rig. Add bobber to fish off the surface, omit to fish off the bottom. Bait with worms, bugs, minnows, meat, marshmallow, soap. Pretty much anything fragrant. Twitch rod tip 1" at random interval, keep line somewhat tight.
Tie with a uni knot for ends and to join lines. Use a palomar to add bits midline. The bobber slides along the line, a snap at the sinker will save money on line.
To cast, look up a youtube video. If your grandad gave you a baitcaster, I recommend learning how to use a conventional reel and turning the brake down or off.
