I seriously do not get why beginners buy tents. If your not going mountaineering or heading to some arctic climate a tarp will do just fine. Tarps are cheaper, light and if you can tie a good totline hitch tarps work as well at keeping you dry as a tent. The only downside is they are a little less warm but that can easily be offset by an extra hat or jacket while sleeping.
