Barbless I like for pike,trout, also bluegill fishing. Not so much for bass since their mouths are easy to work with, but for those other species it's just a pain and I found as long as the fish isnt jumping like he's in a bouncy castle, the hook sticks. I still get jumping-smallmouth throwing barbed hooks too, as well as landing smallmouth on barbless hooks after they jump 4 times.
So honestly whatever makes the release easier for me I just crush the barb.
I agree on the fly fishermen tho, they're always finding someway to be superior
