3. Fruits
Best tasting wild edible, very high in vitamins and other micronutrients, high in water and fiber so not suitable as staple food, varies in abundance and ease of collection and usually requires a lot of work to preserve. The season lasts from late spring through fall, with at least one thing ripening at some point. There's so many different types so I'll just name a few important ones.
Pawpaws (pic related) largest fruit in North America so easiest to collect huge amounts of. Very high in minerals. Tastes like a tropical fruit. Ripens late summer/early fall.
Rosehips. Super high in vitamin c (up to 70x more than oranges) super abundant, will remain on bushes through winter so one of the few things that can be harvested now. Palatability varies from plant to plant, some are bland some taste good, some have many hairs inside that irritate the throat, some don't.
Brambleberries. Taste awesome, usually very abundant, easily identified. At least one variety is ripe throughout summer starting with Black raspberries in late June and black berries in august/September.
Strawberries. Everyone's favorite wild food. Tastes like sex. Early ripening in early June. Not uncommon but due to size hard to gather in any significant quantity.
