40mm just happens to work out really well for Canon DSLR users wanting to take their camera backpacking because of the "pancake" lens available in this focal length. With a low profile lens like this, you can effectively eliminate bouncing from having the camera slung over your shoulder while you hike. If you think you can make use of this focal length, I'd recommend it for hiking.
