>>2441109https://www.chuckhawks.com/handgun_power_chart.htm.357 has the highest one shot stop. Albeit a lot of people can't shoot it worth shit. Fbi stats shows most self defense situations tend to last 5 rounds or less overwhelmingly and within 7 yards I think. Might be less.
A lot of women tend to be weaker and spend less time on the range. If that is the case, get what you can shoot and carry spray.
.357 can shoot 38 special and plus P 38, which is plenty strong for man. J frames do tend to take more training to shoot well.
If you go pistol route and you want pocket or fanny carry I'd be leery of a double action pistol without a decent safety. I'd more look into double single action or a double action with safety.
The lightest tend to be ruger lcrs and Smith and Wesson 642 (38 special) and 43c (if 22lr). You can go lighter with 22lr with a NAA pug but those are pretty much get off me guns as they are single action revolvers and the pug series is the only one with acceptable sights. 22lr has put more people in the ground in US than any other caliber. It's not highest one stop shot, but if it's what you can shoot and afford, it's better than the heavy shit you didn't bring.
Ruger lcrs have a better stock trigger than s&w. Their 22lrs weigh more, but their 38 special is less than smith's 642 at like 13 oz. Smith is slightly smaller, trigger needs break in like a teenager needs God. And Smith still puts horrendous Hillary hole in most revolvers.
You have to get good at using revolver triggers as many double action pistols are 5 lbs pull or less and a revolver can be 10+ pounds. People that shoot a lot get used to setting the heavy pull of a revolver right before the trigger breaks and fires though but again takes that training.
Some gun ranges will let you fire different firearms. I'd just try a 9mm, a 38/357, a 22lr and maybe a 380. I'd use bear spray for the latter two on animals like bear.
