There are pluses to that-the spinning handle acts like a centrifugal spool brake-but also some very obvious minuses. They're not called "knuckle busters" for nothing, after all.
I actually have a couple of those Skilkast reels and fish with them. As old reels go they work pretty well, but they're not modern. That model does have an early anti-backlash adjustment on the left spool tension knob. Get it set right and it'll be pretty good, but it's still no match for a well-trained thumb.
If that reel has a two-piece cork arbor cover, use it. It's meant for using the reel with mono lines (vs the thicker Dacron braid they were originally designed for), you'll get easier casting and fewer tiny wraps of mono awfulness with it on there. If it doesn't, leave the old line at about the half-spool level and tie your new line onto that.
The spindle covers have oil holes. Use them-it matters. Also oil your level wind and put a drop or two in the tiny hole in the center of the nut that holds your handle on. Do that and that reel will come alive again.
