>tfw waiting for an orderThis is getting expensive, but at least I'll have 540 plants from it. Which, at the local greenhouse would cost $40 per flat. They use the 48 cell trays so that's 48 plants for $40 ($0.83 per plant). Which would cost me $450 every year to get as many as what I'll be doing this year. Though, the shelving unit plus trays and lights costs like $600 (not totaled yet), but it is a one time start up fee and everything is happily farm tax and deductible. Also, once it is done it will have 540watts of lighting which costs a good bit, but will only be used 2 months out of the year (12 hours a day for 59 days; 708 hours total). That's 382.32kwh for two months' lighting. That slightly more than doubles my electric bill with an extra $40ish. After the initial cost, only the electric bill will be what I spend each year on making seedling starts for 540 plants. It'll more than pay for itself next growing season. I have 6 of the lights from last season so those have paid for themselves already.
If I can expand my garden I'll be able to build a second shelving unit to start 1080 plants. I think I'd rather get a big greenhouse started before that.
