In my experience the main difference between winter gear and summer gear are:
>sleeping bag (get a 0F kelty from ebay for $100)>sleeping pad (double up sleeping pads to get R value of at least 6)>thermal clothes - just go to walmart buy some long johns if you're on a budget, or poly base layers if you're hikingThe rest was gloves, hats, scarf, socks, etc which I already had from winter day-hiking. Tent is the same, just learn to stake out on snow with deadman anchors.
As for "training", the first winter overnight I did was 7 miles in by unbroken snowshoe onnamountain, which in retrospect was a stupid idea if something went wrong. I would just find a spot where you can hike in half a mile in, so if things go bad you can easily bail
