For me, part of it is the implications of what you're looking out on. Looking out into the stars you see an endless amount of possibilities, civilizations that have risen and fallen, heros and villains have woven their tales. Entire planetary systems created and destroyed. All of that taking place on tiny pieces of rock circling masses of helium undergoing a constant phase of nuclear fusion for billions of years in a small galaxy in a universe filled with a countless amount of galaxies. All of that suspended in the vast emptiness of space. To paraphrase zorba the Greek, it brings about the highest point a man can achieve; not knowledge or virtue or goodness but sacred awe
