Try to find the shapes and logos etched on your pipes and mouthpieces and then try looking them up here:

Basically, they're made by one of the major pipemakers but had some sort of finish or carving flaw that made it unacceptable to be a first-quality pipe worthy of the name brand. They're still drilled fine and smoke well, they just have a minor imperfection.
If you have an unbranded pipe, the best thing to do is pull up the pipe shape charts of the major brands from the country stamped on your pipe. Then just try to match yours to the shape chart to find a maker.
I found that I have a couple of Savinelli-made seconds in my collection that way.
