Low power, narrow band, pick a CTCSS tone.
If you get traffic, move to another freq. Monitor button opens the squelch (have to hold it for a sec on the uv5r's) to let you check channel-clear. Think there's also a busy-channel lock-out feature, though I never use it (i'm good about a quick monitor-check first).
