I mountain hike and go river canoeing for 7-10 days straight every year since I was 12.
These are the lessons I've learned: (warning, maybe only applicable to me)
>Coat with hood made out of galloon (dunno the english common word for it, rubbery non breathing material popular in the 70s and absolutely water proof) is the absolute best but might impair your movements
>goretex and other smart materials will fail you it's just a matter of time
>goretex shell jacket over a wool sweater and thermal underwear is an excellent combo, even better if it's windy
>non cotton underwear and biking rain pants over thermal underwear is good
>keeping feet and crotch dry is more important than you think, several hours in ~10 degrees
celcius and rain will wear you down more than you think
>for maximum comfort, use water proof canoeing gloves
>some of the young girls participating let their hair hang out and get wet
>some people even forego properly slipping the obligatory hood over their head
>this is just stupid
>only do this if maximum vision and hearing is absolutely vital
>avoid cotton in all things
>if you get wet at least stay warm with wool, fleece, neoprene and similar
I'm usually fucked every year anyways because my bleeding heart lends out my best rain gear to miserable kids who failed to shop or pack adequate gear.
