Not him, but many countries will offer "free" (or heavily subsidized) land/housing as a way of revitalizing a specific area. Usually there are stipulations that require you to spend X-amount repairing or improving the place within a certain time period. In Italy our government does this quite a bit with old villages that are starting to become abandoned. Basically the government will sell you a house/property for like 1 euro provided you are willing to spend 5k euros or so fixing it up and living there full time. You can get even better deals if you are a family.

Many other euro countries have similar programs, but I have no idea if this is a thing in burgerland

Not him, but in the short term you're right. Long term changes that though. People have been trading for goods via precious metals for literally thousands of years in both good times and bad. I'm not saying take all your money out of the stock market and buy gold like some Ron Paul-meme, but having some gold on hand certainly won't hurt you.

Nah, food is cheapish (rice, dry beans, etc). Marinas are comfy if you're rich, but there are lots of free harbors. What really will cost you are repairs that you can't do yourself and gas.

Also I would highly advise you do some time crewing on others people's ships before jumping in with both feet. Sailing is an awesome and rewarding hobby but the ocean is serious shit. It's not like a road trip, you can't just pull over and call for a tow when things get rough.
