I assume you probably want to go to the Lake Placid region, so just park at the Adirondack Loj for a few days and camp at Marcy Dam. From there you can go to Avalanche Lake and hit Algonquin Mtn, Wright Peak, Phelps Mtn, Mt Marcy, and/or Skylight Mtns. That is the High Peaks Wilderness Area, so snowshoes are mandatory and no campfires. No camping above 3500’.
If I were you I’d probably just camp in a leanto there and not bother with a tent.
If you wanted something more remote, but not really _epic_ mountains, I’d recommend the West Canada Lakes Wilderness area. Chances are since you’re visiting, you’ll probably be better off at Marcy Dam
