>>680286Fly tying is really fun. You can tie flies with household trash too. Fish don't give a shit and so long as the lure holds together you are golden. The artistic side of it will require a source of high quality feathers, hurl, fur, hair, hackle, etc. and comes down to artist's aesthetics.

Like if I use crappy sewing thread, I make sure to seal it with epoxy, superglue, or fingernail polish. Otherwise, I just use kevlar fly tying thread, which is amazing for making things really tight. Both methods can make for very long lasting flies.
