Wit such a minimal arrival time difference and level difference between the mics it's not a super immersive stereo image. It works and uses the mass of the recorder to its benefit but it's an interesting design.
I don't know what to suggest that can really take much of a beating. Any of these portable recorders have delicate mics. The DR-40 has metal bars that protect the mics when in storage I guess, but otherwise they are rather delicate as well. Dunno brah. Mor expensive/cache brands like Sony or Marantz might have some more rugged options but you gotta pay for that!
