Anything is better than nothing at the edge of the mound for the beds. It just needs to be able to keep soil movement in check for long enough until you get whatever you want for a permanent boarder.

This of course will be the end of your seedlings. You need to protect them. I'm using cheap plastic party cups with the bottoms cut out as a little wall around my seedlings. The upper section of the cups have a layer of petroleum jelly, just under the rim on the outside, to further prevent anything from climbing up and into the oasis.
