The only thing I wish I knew was the cost of maintaining the vehicle when you're travelling and living on the road. Repairing standard wear & tear was almost 10x what we had budgeted.
Make sure you join a forum relating to the car you drive. Im part of the 'Troopcarriers of Australia' and the knowledge from the members is invaluable. Not only for info relating to your vehicle but on places to go, tracks etc etc.
Also if you have a Wikicamps phone app available for your country, get it. Much better than any Visitor information centre, blog or forum.
