So before I begin this let me just say that I'm probably gonna use this van as a weekend warrior type shtick/roadtrip queen, otherwise it'll sit pretty in the California sun or be a DIY tinkering project.
I've been looking at getting a van and have been wondering: would it be better to fix up a pre-made campervan like one of those Vanagon Westfalias or a sweetly priced Sportsmobile conversion, or to DIY a campervan out of an old shortbus or cargo van? I'm under the impression fixing up a pre-made is the easier of the two--lots of elbow grease and soap to scrub the interiors and maybe a bit more dosh down to reupholster the seats and, if there is a mattress, tossing that shit out because bedbugs.
And what do you look for when you are just about to purchase the van? I know body rust or any sort of glaringly obvious patch or repair jobs are obvious warning signs alongside nonworking appliances, but what else is there to look for? Is it just a combination of the worst aspects of trying to buy a used car mixed with trying to buy an apartment? Would it be easier simply buying a pickup truck and grabbing a cab-over afterward?
