My findings after years of pipe smoking
- clipper lighters are best pipe lighters
- rolled cardboard paper filters are best filters
- vintage Prince brand tamper is best tamper
Clippers do an amazing good job at lighting a pipe and the cost < $2. They are reliable, refillable, you can bring half a dozen for the price and when you lose one in the woods you don't throw a tantrum like when losing a corona old boy.
A 200 booklet of roll your own cardboard filters cost <$1 at the local head shop, they pack down smol in your pouch and they absorb a ton of condensate and moisture and make the smoke noticeably dryer. unlike their cardboard cartridge cousins don't shed either meerschaum or carbon particles, don't get damaged, don't contain plastics and are 100% bio degradable.
Prince tamper is the perfect construction as the tamper is clipped into the sleeve with springs, meaning you can hold your pipe bowl in your left hand, tuck the tool between your index and middle finger of your left, remove the tamper (click) from the sleeve with your right, tamp your bowl, put the tamper back into the sleeve (click) and the whole thing goes back into your pocket without ash stains or fiddling or screwing around. screw in pick on top for when you need it. Get one used on ebay while you still can, those things are insanely convenient.
