2's require less/easier maintenance, but more frequently. The 4's have a little more mechanics in them (mainly in the head, valves/cam(s)), bottom-end/transmission's basically the same. I've worked on both, truthfully the 4's really aren't that much more difficult to work on. Just a couple more parts/processes.
>>570725>new head and valves about 1000 1200See, I've got over 800 hours/25k miles on my bike, I do a piston/cylinder every 150-200h. Alternate between hone and replate on the cylinder (Honed it out last rebuild, next one's going to be replate).
Last rebuild was huge - stripped everything down, tore it all apart... about 3mos of working on it almost every weekend. Said-and-done, it was about $1200 in parts.... nearly every bearing, all the seals got replaced (engine, front/rear brakes, clutch, frame/chassis). Split the cases, tore everything down and replaced/serviced anything that wasn't to my standards. Most of the time my top-ends are about $500-ish... piston, cylinder replate, gasket kit, and a few weekends in the garage.
My KTM's also a "race motor" (RFS = Racing Four Stroke...), any "race motor" is going to need a little more TLC than something built for longevity (when's the last time you've rebuilt your car's engine?).
Know one guy who just rolled over 150k miles on his Vstrom 650.
