The past 2 days I've been moving soil from old raised garden beds to my raised garden beds. The soil was made from composted horse stall hay and horse manure. Some of it has sand added. This stuff is 3 to 4 years old now and is awesome soil. I'd moved two truck loads so far and there's like 6-10 more truck loads left to get.
In my raised beds the existing hay and yard waste that has been composting is being covered over with the new soil. The soil is about a foot deep. This makes these beds sort of like hugelkultur, but only using yard waste and straw. I've actually given thought of filling the remaining beds with deadfall from the woods on my property topping that with yard waste and the soil I'm bringing in.
I'll be planting soon. Can't wait till the preliminaries are done and the lawn is mowed the first time. I'll have massive amounts of grass clippings for these beds this year.
