>>671025they're hard to come-by. it's hard enough to find groves of them, but a larger forest-sized stand is even rarer. there are at least groves in NH/Maine, Alaska, and Eastern and Northern Yurôp. they do well at the edge of the woods or as groups of saplings in a clearing or field, but as the rest of the forest grows-in around them they tend to die. they just aren't as robust and don't compete with other species well. I would love to find an old-ass/old growth stand of white birches.
the birches in my woods are all fairly young and probably about one dies per year (disease, uprooting in a storm, etc)
