french double buckles are great for carelessly walking over uneven eroded terrain, obscured by long wet grass, at night. i crossed a 20m flat bridge across a river with the first inch above the footbed submerged, and my feet weren't wet afterwards. the leather is hard and very thick, but incurs permanent scuffs easily - so they won't look pretty for long. the soles are vibrams pattern, but the lugs are far enough apart that they aren't easily gummed up with dirt or rocks. ankle support is excellent, and the buckles mean they don't cut off blood flow to your ankles. they're not very good to run in
