Let's talk greetings.
In Japan, the tradition is to greet every single person you pass on the trail with a konnichiwa, regardless of whether they're in a group or engaged in a conversation. In America, it's not quite the same.
Disregarding long trips in the wilderness on unpopular trails (when you only see 5 other hikers in a day, chances are high that you will greet them all), what do you normally do/say when passing other hikers on the trail? What is the traditional hiker greeting in your country (if there is one)? Are there any people you do not greet?

My standard greeting is "how ya doin?" and I try to say it to everybody, even on a very popular trail, excepting groups, where I may only greet the person in front and anybody who verbally greets me. It really annoys me when I greet people and they just pass me like they didn't hear me. Or if I make eye contact and at least nod my head, and they just look away/don't acknowledge me. I don't care if you're hiking with your wife/husband, you're not a child.
