You're making a (very, very weak) hinge. Not a joint.
These are joints. Now yes, absolutely, an auger is a very useful tool for woodworking, using dowels to secure wood joins without nails...an auger that size is best used for FULL SIZED LOGS. For material that size, you want something about an inch wide, maximum.
