They're good for what they are. I get photos/video with mine (Contour) that I couldn't get with any of my other cameras because of its design.
As a camera, they're no better than a cheap cameraphone (although sometimes mine amazes me with the images it'll get).
DSLRs are great, but
>expensive>heavy>complicated, if all you want to do is take a picture>Learning curve>Lots of parts/accessories/lenses to carry withI have a Nikon and take it out regularly, if I'm going out with the intent of coming back with good pictures.
I also have a smaller "bridge" P&S camera. It has some similar features of the Nikon (M/A/S/P) with decent optics, but without the size/weight/expense/complication of my Nikon.
Took >pic related with my P&S yesterday. Could I have gotten a better photo with my Nikon? Sure. However, my primary activity yesterday was teaching a group of new snowmobilers about avalanche safety. Taking photos was secondary to that task.
