I was a ranch-hand on 10k acres, which was 20 miles in, on a dirt road, from a small town. I never went out into the woods without a firearm. It was mostly for critters (mountain lions, bears, hogs, and rattle snakes), but the area was know for poachers (private property) trying to get big game. We used CB radios if we ever found a poacher... ranger rick would be notified and all the ranchers would then go poacher hunting.
