I've been working on teaching myself to use the three main turkey calls; pot, box and diaphragm. I've bought about half a dozen different cut mouth diaphragms. I can cluck, putt, and purr but I'm still working on yelping. I can get it right sometimes but I'm not consistent. I bought a cheap Strutt raspy hen set to give the box and pot calls in that set a try. The box call was by far the easiest to learn. I was able to consistently make yelps, clucks and purrs. It's also very easy to cut on. The frosted glass pot call was another story. It frustrated me for several weeks before I decided to try another inexpensive beginner pot call. I chose the Primos power crystal after watching several videos on its ease of use. Starting from a completely fresh crystal and conditioning it myself was easy enough. I'm no longer worried about fucking up a better one sometime down the road. After watching a video on how to hold the striker and changing my hold from 12 o'clock to 1 o'clock I was yelping, clucking, cutting and purring in no time. I still can't get consistent sounds from that strutt pot call. But I'm very pleased with my ability to consistently make good calls on the new primos call.
