Basic needs are a rod/reel, lures/bait, an auger, warm clothes and a shelter. This varies depending on where you're at.
I live on Lake Simcoe in Ontario. My go to for ice fishing is for yellow perch. Fish for them in areas where the bottom of the water is still visible with a mix of vegetation/rocks, not too sandy. I primarily use a spoon called a slab grabber fished just off the bottom with lots of action.
