I read an an article about people wearing cotton and getting caught in a downpour, then dying of hypothermia (though it was only like 40/50 degrees out), so I started looking for alternatives. Basically I find old 100% wool dress pants/slacks, but out the polyester liner, handwash them, and they are good as new. With some long underwear they are extremely warm (the heaver weaves), and pretty water-resistant. Also they cost $6, versus the new merino hiking gear that costs upwards of $80
